The GOP wasted a full work week fighting among themselves to elect a leader. It took an unruly GOP 15 attempts to finally get their act together and elect Kevin McCarthy as Speaker. To win the support of the Freedom Caucus, McCarthy made several concessions which many saw as capitulations to the hard-right group and ultimately weakened his authority within the party.
In order to ascend to the Speakership, McCarthy agreed to a Motion to Vacate that gives any one member of Congress at any time the power to call for a floor vote on whether or not he should remain Speaker.
And with firebrands like those in the ultra conservative Freedom Caucus, he has essentially made himself “Speaker in Name Only” as they can cut off his authority at any time and for any reason.
This leaves many questioning what exactly our Republican Representative Kevin Kiley plans on doing while in office. During his campaign, he promised to help lower grocery prices, however no information has been released that would suggest he or his colleagues have any real plan in place to help Americans cut down their costs of living.
Instead of working towards solutions they promised while campaigning, the Republican party is now focused on investigations into Dr. Fauci, Hunter Biden, and even the FBI – none of which will affect how much I pay for eggs at Winco. I haven’t heard any dissent from Kiley about all of these nonsensical investigations so it is safe to assume he supports them.
These investigations appear purely political in nature rather than serving as an attempt to fix economic disparities or bring relief to our struggling neighbors. The lack of action taken by Republicans thus far is concerning, as it reflects just how little they actually care about the issues that they campaigned on prior to being elected into office.
This lack of attention paid to actual issues affecting people shows why so many are so quick to criticize them for their partisan politics and lack of willingness to actually solve problems in America today. MAGA Republicans are only interested in partisan mud-slinging versus actually getting anything done.
The lack of tangible action taken by GOP members like Kiley is frustrating for many constituents who feel misled by empty promises and are now stuck with a Speaker whose weaker position means far less accountability for both him and his colleagues when it comes to delivering results.
Some are even beginning to suspect that this was part of a larger strategy from certain factions within the party; an attempt at distracting from meaningful change by engaging in partisan mud-slinging instead. Without any real progress being made on issues like inflation or healthcare reform, it’s hard not to feel disappointed with the direction of the GOP Majority in Congress.
The Republican party’s drive for power has come at a cost for ordinary citizens in California’s 3rd district – a cost which is only compounded by their refusal to prioritize important economic issues. Constant finger-pointing and investigations rather than real policy solutions will leave everyday Americans struggling with rising costs of living and little support from Republican representatives. This is not what Americans voted for – it is time for the GOP to make good on its promises before further damage is done.
If the GOP squanders its time investigating and gets nothing done, they will have no one to blame but themselves.
